Can I use a toothbrush (soft bristled) to apply the orajel/ ambasol? Just a dry one with no toothpaste?

Since wearing my speed braces with the elastics, my jaw and face feels like I've been punched. Can I use a dry, soft brush to spread some orajel on the most painful areas?
