Why are railroad tracks 4' 8 and a half inches? Why not make it wider?

Wouldn't it be better if the width of the railroad tracks are wider? I just think if making the tracks 6 feet wide would be a whole lot better. That way they can: 1)carry more cargo and passengers. 2) Won't tip over easily. 3) It makes more sense and just looks better.
