Can a person's face become unrecognisable through emotion?

My partner's face changed so much during a strong discussion, that if he were to walk past me in the street, I would not recognise him. It was showing no emotion but not blank either. It really scared me, I thought he would physically snap. Is what I saw possible? Or, was it just my perception? If so, is there a problem I should be concerned about?
